YES, Females Watch Sports Too

It is always funny to me whenever I go to a sports bar to watch a game guys always seem to assume that I'm there to meet my "boyfriend" and that I not only not like sports but I know nothing about the games.  Then once I start spitting facts, stats, and my opinions about the game, teams and players the look on their faces are priceless, they are in complete awe like where did she come from. Yes fellas there are a few females that are out here in the world that are not tomboys that love sports just as much as you do.

First and foremost, I do not like sports because of a guy, I do not watch sports to spend time with my man, and I am not a groupie trying to make a come up.  With social media and reality tv these days females are so easily classified as groupies because they watch sports, go to sporting events or this that in the other.  Dude can I just enjoy the game just like you are.  And YES I wear heels and I am a girly girl but I still know the game.  Ladies we too can enjoy sports just as much as guys do and not lose ourselves.

Yes if you see me out more than likely I will have on heels.... Yes I cook nightly and can bake....  And Yes if you see me out and about you would not be able to tell that I'm a sports fanatic.  But yes I am a die hard sports fan and will go head to head with a guy in a sports debate.

Below are a few tips for ladies to be able to enjoy sports on their own terms:

  1. Ladies its ok to not wear oversized jerseys.  Take your favorite team's colors and add a little girly flavor to it.
  2. Know the rules of the games and have your own opinion.  Don't repeat what you hear on ESPN.  A good sports debate is always good for the soul.
  3. Ladies pick a favorite team and stick with it.  Don't float from team to team.
  4. Find a group of females that love sports just as much as you.  There are a few of us out there.
  5. And finally HAVE FUN with it.  You'll be surprised how entertaining sports can be.

Georgia Eliminated from Little League World Series

Being a Georgia girl and only 20 minutes north of Warner Robins, GA, I was very sadden tonight when the Georgia team, which was representing the Southeast division was defeated by Pennsylvania.  In the 6 inning game Pennsylvania got off to an early lead scoring 6 of their 7 runs in the 1st inning.  Jake Fromm's made two-run homer in the 4th inning and when bases were loaded with a batter at the plate in the top of the 5th it looked like Warner Robins just maybe would come and win the game, moving on to the next round of the World Series.   Although Georgia later made a run hoping to top Pennsylvania they were unable to come back as PA held off to win 7-5.  "The first inning we could have played a lot better defense. I don't know if it was the crowd or what, but we couldn't make a play in that first inning," Georgia manager Phillip Johnson said. "That ended up being the difference in the game."

Baseball is a very big deal in Warner Robins, especially Little League, as the Warner Robins team has represented Georgia in the LLWS for years even winning the Little League World Series in 2007.  When watching the game you could see the disappointment in the players and fans faces as they watched Pennsylvania shatter their dreams of winning it all this year.

Pryor to the Raiders

After the NFL postponed the Supplemental Draft to take a closer look at the Terrelle Pryor situation, Pryor was drafted by the Oakland Raiders as a quarterback, that is for now.

The NFL wanted to take a close look at Pryor's situation whom decided at the last minute to forgo his last year at Ohio State after being declared ineligibly able to participate in this years season.  After much consideration the NFL decided to allow Pryor to enter the Supplemental Draft but he would be suspended for the first 5 games of the regular season.  When the NFL gave their decision that Pryor would be suspended Pryor's lawyer reported that they would appeal the decision by the NFL, but later decided not to appeal.  The NFL made it clear that the decision for the suspension had nothing to do with the suspension Pryor would have underwent at Ohio State if he would have been eligible to play.

It was much debate among many NFL analysts whether Pryor would go in the 1st round of the draft.  Some felt that he should and some felt that he shouldn't.  But after running the 40 in approximately 4.3 seconds Pryor ended up going in the 3rd round to the Raiders.  Pryor went on to say, "I'm happy with the opportunity that the Raiders have given me.  I'm going to work hard and do whatever needs to be done to help the Raiders win."

(Cal Sport Media)
Update: Pryor agreed to a 4 year deal with the Oakland Raiders and be able to practice and play with Raiders for the remainder of the preseason.  Once regular season begins Pryor will not be able to practice or play with the Raiders until week 6 of regular season.

Keep It Safe

Concussions...  Broken bones... Torn Ligaments...

Injuries occur in sports all of the time.  Many athletes suffer from knee injuries, sprains, fractures, and several other injuries.  With my love for sports and medicine I wanted to incorporate a post that included safety pointers for those participating in sports.  With the increase in heat wave over the summer we have seen health issues in sports take a jump in something that happens but is not widely seen... Heat exhaustion.  With the heat increase we have seen a high school football player in Georgia and a coach in the state of Texas die during practice, we have seen Mike Patterson of the Philadelphia Eagles pass out and have a seizure during training camp, as well as reality star Royce Reed black out and seizure during a charity softball game.

Here are some tips to keep in mind while participating in all sports:

  • Drink LOTS of water to prevent dehydration and overheating.
  • Warm up and stretch before taking the field/court
  • Each player should know their limits before reaching exhaustion
  • Cool down after playing
  • Eat, eat, EAT proper foods; eat a light, healthy meal a few hours before hitting the field/court

And remember if you're not feeling well, if something hurts, do not force yourself to play through the pain, inform your coach and see a doctor to make sure that whatever is going on with you is nothing that is serious.  We wouldn't want you to over exert yourself and end up hurting yourself even more.
